Auto on/off xenon headlights are standard on the SL and optional with the SE too, while chrome trim embellishes the door handles and roof moldings and four chrome-tipped ports finalize the dual exhaust system on both models. The Max also comes in eight exterior colors for 2004.

From a design perspective all I had to go on when the previous article aired was a single rear quarter view, which gave a hint as to the design direction but was hardly satisfying. The new Maxima displays a bold, chiseled appearance that should be welcomed by current owners and prospective sport sedan buyer's alike. It's also extremely distinctive, with few design cues that appear borrowed.

What I couldn't have guessed due to its segment-first designation is the Maxima's unique Skyview Roof, made up of a fixed piece of glass that stretches almost the entire length of the passenger compartment shedding light on front and rear occupants alike. What's more, the feature is standard on all models - a traditional power-operated glass sunroof is optional.

And there's more space to enjoy the airy feeling. The new model increases all major interior dimensions compared to the the previous generation Maxima, including a 74 mm (2.9 in) longer wheelbase, increased from 2,751 mm (108.3 in) to 2,825 mm (111.2 in), while vehicle width increases 36 mm (1.4 in), from 1,786 mm (70.3 in) to 1,821 mm (71.7 in). Trunk space also grows by 11 L (0.4 cu ft), from 428 L (15.1 cu ft) to 439 L (15.5 cu ft).

I'm looking forward to driving the new Maxima. The current generation SE model, especially in 6-speed manual guise, is a car that I always look forward to getting into and always have misgivings about giving back. It's an all round athlete, quick off the blocks, a stellar long range endurance runner and as comfortable as a custom fit pair of Asics.
