With the problem of getting there out of the way, the Cayenne also does a decent job of packing in the gear to make the final destination as enjoyable. A total of 1,770 L (62.5 cu ft) of cargo space is available if you leave the kids at home, with 540 L (19.1 cu ft) with the rear seats upright. While not at the levels of some of its full-size competitors, it beats the heck out of 911 and Boxster storage volumes. Payload levels are higher too, at 3,060 kg (6,746 lbs) for the S model tested. What can't be stowed inside can be towed, up to 3,500 kg (7,716 lbs) of cargo to be exact.

In the end, only a Lexus LX 470, Range Rover or
Volkswagen Touareg, the latter which shares its basic architecture with the Porsche, can keep up off road. Then again neither of these three comes close to maintaining the Cayenne's clip on pavement, setting the Porsche again in a class of one.

It's simply one of, if not the best all round SUV available due to these highly developed dual personalities; off-road capability and on-pavement agility. Add to that its beautifully detailed, well built cabin, plus better than average expected reliability, and Porsche has a winning answer to your SUV queries - that is if you're well-heeled.
Those at the other end of the economic spectrum that want an SUV with off-road capabilities and on-road performance might want to consider a
Jeep Grand Cherokee, or yet further down the price scale, a
Kia Sorento.
