Choosing a used Accord Hybrid may be a tough call for many shoppers
The point? If you notice any strange or unwelcomed noises like these from the engine compartment on a test-drive, be sure to find out why.

Another possible issue may be related to the transmission. Some drivers report a ‘clunking’, ‘surging’ or ‘vibration’ that’s apparent when shifting gears, though it’s not completely clear whether this is normal-- given the nature of hybrid models and how they blend gas and electric power to propel the vehicle. If the Accord Hybrid you’re considering doesn’t feel like its shifting properly, be double sure to have it inspected by a hybrid-certified dealer mechanic.

In terms of failure or common issues specifically with the Accord’s hybrid-related componentry, the model appears relatively safe. Though hybrids are still relatively unproven, your correspondent was largely unable to find any common issues with the IMA system on the Insight Hybrid, nor the Accord Hybrid with this latest writeup. That said, if you’re skeptical of the repair or replacement costs of batteries, electric motors or the computers which control them, you definitely aren’t alone.

Other standard used vehicle checks apply to the Accord Hybrid. Brakes, alignment, tires, body, interior and suspension components should all be inspected fully to ensure the vehicle’s former owner isn’t trying to ditch an expensive repair job. The Accord Hybrid still requires oil, coolant and transmission fluid changes like any other car, so you’ll want to be sure these are up to date, too.

Ultimately, the decision to get into a used Accord Hybrid might be a tough one. If you’ve got your own reasons for being dead set on this machine, shop carefully, test-drive thoroughly, and try to find a model that’s familiar to the selling Honda dealer. A full checkup is mandatory, and an extended warranty that covers the hybrid drivetrain components isn’t a bad idea either.

On the other side of the equation, if you’re after an Accord with a bit more power and performance than offered by the standard V6, look into adding an intake and exhaust system-- which could prove less expensive in the long run. Like many Canadians, you’ll probably find a healthy four-cylinder powered model to be good on fuel and very reliable for years to come, too.
