Last-gen Mustang looks solid as a used performance-car buy
Whether new, used or even customized heavily, few machines can beat the Ford Mustang when it comes to high-performance bang for the buck. Launched decades ago, this V8-powered American icon has survived unscathed in a marketplace where many other models have failed. It’s packed full of history and nostalgia, too.

The last-generation Mustang saw designers bring the model back to its visual roots, giving the machine a new modern/retro look that’s been carried on and evolved to this day. Shoppers considering a last-generation ‘Stang can look for coupe or convertible body styles, as well as power from both 6 and 8 cylinder engines.

Specifically, standard models got a four-liter V6 with 210 horsepower, while the Mustang GT got a 4.6 liter, 300 horsepower V8. Automatic or manual transmissions were available teamed with either powerplant.

Numerous options and packages were available-- including navigation, a premium ‘Shaker’ audio system, Bluetooth phone connectivity and heated leather seating. Additionally, special edition Mustangs like the Bullitt and California Special added different equipment and styling touches to create more unique models.

No surprises to note with owner likes and dislikes. Styling, power, reputation and sound effects largely attracted shoppers to the last-generation Mustang, just like models before it. Other favorite features included the color-selectable gauges and mood lighting, as well as the potent up-level stereo system.

Complaints included ‘hard’ leather seats, some cheap interior trim, limited rearward visibility and the lack of a manual mode for the automatic transmission. Some drivers, additionally, say the shifter on manual-equipped models feels ‘clunky’.

In the used market, Mustang mainly looks like a solid buy as performance cars go-- though a few standard checks and some shopper discretion are mandatory in ensuring you don’t wind up with a model that’s been abused and neglected.

Starting outside the car, check the edges of the used Mustang candidate’s body panels for signs of rust, bubbling, peeling or poor-quality cosmetic repairs. Numerous owners have noted rust and oxidation on the paint as the car ages, so be on the lookout for it. A small rust blister is typically several times larger than it appears on the surface. Double check around the gas cap, beneath the spoiler mounting points, on the edge of the hood and on the bottom of the doors.
