With the overhaul in 2002, much work was done to improve the S-Type's interior accommodations, addressing leg and headroom problems as well as tactile quality. Aside from new instruments, which feature a more elegant typeface and chrome exterior rings, the 2005 model year update won't radically change the car's cockpit. For the Sport and R-models, aluminum trim will be offered for a brighter, more technical appearance. Also, a larger pallet of colors for both exterior and interior will be available, satisfying more individual tastes.

Improvements to the chassis and suspension are relatively minor as well. Jaguar has reportedly tinkered with the current settings to create a vehicle that's slightly more agile, responsive and fun to drive. The CATS system, available on the current S-Type, has truly helped in this department.

Currently, the S-Type has a pretty full variety of engines available. Basic models feature a 2.5 liter V6 engine borrowed from the entry-level X-Type; however it will not be sold in North America. Standard in Canada is an advanced 3.0 liter V6 that features variable valve timing and a varying manifold to produce an impressive 240 horsepower. Higher up in the model range is a 300 horsepower 4.2 liter V8, shared with the full-size XJ8 4.2 sedan and XK8 coupe and convertible. At the top of the heap is the S-Type R, which features a 400-hp supercharged version of the aforementioned V8 unit. All engines, except the 3.0-L V6 that comes standard with a 5-speed manual, are equipped with a 6-speed ZF automatic gearbox.
