| There's a lot of hearsay regarding the next generation Jeep TJ, or TK as insiders refer to it. Some say it will hardly deviate from the current, classic shape while others feel it will finally take on a more modern identity, similar to the Icon concept vehicle (shown). (Photo: DaimlerChrysler) |
The next generation Scrambler will also follow in the footsteps, or should I say tread marks, of the TJ and previous CJ-8 Scrambler in off-road capability. Currently the TJ has no competitors when it comes to 4x4 prowess, boding well for the upcoming trucklette. As an added bonus the new model should also provide a much better ride. Due to the stretched wheelbase, its ride "is more comfortable, and it feels better on the road" than the TJ, Murphy commented.
Also, the U.S. version was hit hard in 2002 dropping 6.5% in sales to 64,351 units. The addition of an expected 20,000 Scramblers annually will help "fill up the plant," stated Murphy. The TJ is currently produced in Toledo, Ohio.

What's funny about all this is that Chrysler Group executives reportedly didn't intend to announce the upcoming Scrambler just yet, but since it was part of a display at the U.S. National Auto Dealers Association (NADA) convention's exhibit floor it just slipped out.
Jeep CJ-8 fans, however, will be excited they did. In case you're wondering just how devoted these Scrambler zealots are, each year owners gather to test their mettle in the 'Spring Scrambler'. A dedicated website, http://scrambler.cj-8.com, details the annual event and also offers information about early versions of the popular pickup. It's probably one of the best model specific websites I've ever seen.
There's no doubt, in today's crossover mad market, that the Scrambler will do its part in filling the Toledo plant's production capacity. What's even more significant is that it will continue an important legacy, resurrecting not only a model name but reinventing a vehicle configuration that, like the TJ, will be unique in its market segment.
