Safety

The RX 330 has 7 standard air bags (dual front, side, side curtain and a driver-side knee air bag), ABS brakes with electronic brake force distribution and brakes assist, traction control and seatbelt pre-tensionners. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) awarded the truck 5 out of 5 stars (a perfect result) for the driver and 4 out of 5 stars (a good result) for the passenger in frontal impacts. It was also awarded 5 out of 5 stars for both front and rear passengers in lateral impacts. The IIHS has rated it a "Best Pick" in its category.

Conclusion

The RX 330 is a wonderful posh city commuter. I somehow expected it to do much more than simply be good at a few things. For a high-end vehicle, I found that wind noise was very strong and the cabin not quiet enough. I was not enticed by any particular aspect of the truck. It purely lacks an edge.

It is an odd world where consumers want big power but are concerned about getting low gas mileage. This is where the RX 400h (268 hp Hybrid Synergy Drive 3.3L V6) comes in. At a shade over $62,000, it has the equivalent gear of the Sport Package for about $4,000 more. The Ultra Premium equipped RX 400h retails for $69,700; a hefty $6,200 more than our tester. If the claimed 15 to 20% improvement in fuel economy is real, the premium for the base RX 400h could be worthwhile.

What the RX 330 needs, for those that are less apprehensive about rising gas prices, is the new Avalon's 280 hp 3.5L V6. The addition of this engine would allow the RX 330 to perform in the same league as the Infiniti FX35 and surpass the Acura MDX.

If utility and reliability (as opposed to prestige) are what you are looking for in this type of vehicle, then I would strongly suggest the Toyota Highlander. For about $4,000 less, you get the same engine and more cargo space. Otherwise, a $56,400 Acura MDX will get you the same stuff as the Ultra Premium, more engine and interior space for $7,000 less.

Good stuff:

It's a Lexus (Reliability and prestige)
Passenger accommodations

Not so good stuff:
Brake pedal
Could use a few extra horses
