A specialty to the V50 is a new choice in trim - Iced Aqua - available alongside the aluminum or wood trim. When selected, the entire console becomes translucent, though frosted with a turquoise color. Most of the electronics in the console is now in plain sight; an interesting take that's a little bit left field. As for the space in back, the new V50 offers 417 liters of cargo capacity with the rear seats up, and when the split seatbacks are folded flat, 1307 liters of volume is available. Despite the 1.8 meter long loading floor and a tall roof, its smaller size is overshadowed by the outgoing V40 wagon's 1,412 liters of total space.

Volvo has not announced pricing or an exact release date for the V50 as of yet, with both expected closer to the car's arrival. The global sales target is 74,000 per year, with 1,000 of those destined for Canada. It will be produced in Ghent, Belgium, just like the outgoing V40 and new S40 sedan, with an ultimate capacity of 270,000 cars per annum.

How will it fare in the competitive compact luxury market? If competitively priced, and it should be, the much better looking V50 will without a doubt do much better than its V40 predecessor, a rare car to try and find on the road.
