As for the upgraded engine, it delivers more power (360 hp) as well as
animpressive 650 lb-ft of torque. Paradoxically, this engine creates less pollution in the form of NOx and noise emissions. It burns fuel more efficiently while the reduced compression ratio mitigates the various noises and vibrations.
Furthermore, a revised version of the variable geometry turbocharger enhances the driving experience. Aerodynamic modifications to the thrusters have been made to efficiently channel the turbo power and to create an instant response (no turbo lag). This is good for a 0-to-100 sprint in less than 9 seconds. According to GM, the improved turbocharger also helps to reduce toxic emissions.
That's not all. The Duramax 6600 engine is also equipped with an intake air heater that reduces smoke and emissions during cold or light load driving. The engine therefore warms up faster.
Those who prefer a gasoline engine can opt for the Silverado 2500 HD
with a 6.0-liter V8. The drivetrain was modified to make the engine compatible with compressed natural gas or biofuel.
Despite the impressive power, the robust chassis, the great suspension and the solid brakes of the Silverado (and Sierra), the construction vehicle managers I spoke with seem to keep their faith in Ford products for carrying heavy loads repeatedly. Will the arrival of the new and improved Silverado/Sierra change anything? With 30 percent of its sales coming from pickups, GM no doubt has its fingers crossed. The payload and towing capacities will be increased. And let's not forget about the widened track, the stiffer structure, the better suspension, the revised steering as well as the redesigned interior with more room and amenities.
So outdated
While the exterior of the redesigned truck is a natural evolution from the current model, the cab will be entirely different. That's because everything in the 2006 Silverado is obsolete. Comparisons with Ford F-Series trucks don't make sense. It would like me comparing my beige melamine cupboards with my neighbor's recently renovated wood and marble kitchen....
The new HDs are set to arrive in dealerships in January 2007.
