with four-wheel discs, ABS (antilock brakes) and EBD (electronic brake force distribution), they put a quick halt to forward momentum no matter the velocity.

And getting up to speed won't be a problem either, thanks to a wonderfully refined 3.8-liter V6, complete with DOHC and 24 valves that help to make an energetic 263-horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 257 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm. The engine is mated to what seems like a resistance-free five-speed automatic with manual-shift mode, which made quick but smooth shifts and never hunted around for the right gear during steep uphill inclines.

Also important, the Azera's standard ESC (Electronic Stability Control) with traction control will keep the car pointed in the right direction if slippery road conditions get it out of shape.

Azera's standard equipment list, if it stands the same when it finally hits the market, includes such amenities as dual-zone automatic climate control, a power tilt and telescopic steering wheel, controls on that wheel for cruise and audio, an integrated memory system for the powered driver's seat, outside mirrors, steering column and foot pedals, a power rear sunshade, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a power glass sunroof, power windows and locks, of course, as well as remote access via the key fob, power mirrors, and more critical to some, safety features that include front dual active headrests and a full array of eight next-generation airbags protecting all outboard occupants. Yes, the standard features and overall goodness of the Azera should be available for about $25,000 when it goes on sale later this month, although my Premium package equipped tester will likely start at just under $30K.
