because of the new engine orientation in the chassis, the Passat will no longer utilize the TORSEN-based system found in the previous model. Instead, the Swedish-made Haldex multi-plate clutch system currently used by Volvo and Ford, in its new Five Hundred/Mercury Montego sedans and Freestyle crossover SUV will be adopted. controls, the multi-function steering wheel and the navigation/LCD head unit, are carried over directly.

Volkswagen will be introducing several key technologically-advanced mechanical and comfort features which should help keep the Passat on top of the competition. A new electric handbrake is standard, replacing the conventional handbrake 'stick' with a simple button. It has the ability to auto-release, aiding in hill starts, and can hold the car at a stop light without use of the brake pedal. Bi-Xenon headlamps with adaptive curve technology and Electronic Stability Program are also on the options list.
