The same holds true for the optional power folding third row. Aside from offering limited room and comfort, it takes quite a while to completely disappear into the floor -- you'd better plan a few minutes ahead. Sure enough, once these seats are folded, the available cargo room is generous and easy to access thanks to the large power liftgate and low threshold.

The engine of the SRX is a solid though fuel-thirsty performer.

Power to spare

Driving dynamics are the most impressive aspect of the SRX. Granted, my tester was powered by the mighty 4.6L V8. Like all other Northstar engines, however, it has a significant thirst for fuel, which was expected given the size of the vehicle.

On the other hand, performance enthusiasts will be thrilled to know that power at any RPM will always be strong yet flexible. This proven engine is quite responsive and surprisingly dynamic, although it tends to make itself heard a bit too much, which somewhat spoils the fun.

The 6-speed automatic transmission was definitely up to the task, so much so that I found rather useless the available Sport mode with Driver Shift Control. It's smooth and pleasantly effective even without the driver's help.

The same cannot be said of the speed-sensitive, power variable-assist steering, however. It seemed relatively heavy, although it allows surprising agility for such a big SUV. You can point the SRX to within millimeters of a specific target and, by using traction control smartly, test the limits of road grip. Again, very impressive.

My biggest complaint is the lack of rearward visibility. The center head restraint of the middle row directly interferes with the driver's field of vision, making parking maneuvers that much harder. It's a shame considering how the rest of the vehicle has been so cleverly thought out.

While a bit pricey, the SRX should find a niche in the controversial crossover segment. Design, performance and Cadillac prestige are definitely in the mix.
