The customized configuration of the factory-installed cargo area is another feature that could make buyers purchase right now. For instance, there's the Quiet-Flex Luxury Package. Why "Quiet"? Because the storage bins are made of hard plastic instead of metal, which makes them less noisy when the vehicle rides on rough terrain. The Crown Masterack ($2,495) is free of charge in 2007. So not only is the overall price lower, but this feature will save time for fleet managers while answering their daily needs in terms of ergonomics and durability.

Several interesting upgrades have been added for 2007.

Our tester

Ford gave us the keys of a base Commercial E-150 ($29,799). Beyond the various free upgrades, a few additions increased the vehicle's price to $33,509.

Under the hood was a proven 4.6L V8 engine mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. This combo is powerful enough to tow a 3,000-kilo load. On the road, the E-150 proved to be more solid than the previous model thanks to the beefed up chassis and larger stabilizer bar. Moreover, the rear antisway bars have been reinforced. As a result, the ride is more stable and the solid axle is less prone to hopping.

Our tester was also equipped with the Power Group, which is remarkable in this category. Even the driver's seat now includes power adjustments as well as an adjustable lumbar support. The optional backup sensor was also in the mix. I found this feature to be highly useful with such a large vehicle. The next time you see a cargo van, take a closer look at the body and bumpers: scratches and dents multiply like crazy when drivers perform parking maneuvers.

Supplier options
While young enthusiasts look for a car with a high-tech audio unit, seasoned workers who hang their ladders on the side of their vans should be excited by the E-150's Power Rack roof system ($1,573). Simply push a button and your ladder is automatically lifted and locked into place.

The clever Power Rack system.
