New E 550 Makes Tracks
My preference was for the E-Class, simply because it seemed slightly more tail happy, therefore more fun to toss around, rally-style. Switching off the electronic stability program (ESP) and attempting to induce sliding in the corners led to the conclusion that the E 550 is incredibly well-mannered and easily controllable. Putting the power down on the dirt surface met with a momentary wiggle at the rear followed immediately by sheer, ground-swallowing traction.

Overall, driving the E550 is a gratifying experience.

As per Mercedes policy, the ESP system cannot be completely switched off, so it makes its presence known if things appear likely to get out of hand. So, too, will the 4-wheel Electronic Traction System, (4-ETS+), which also cannot be disabled. The message: If you fling an E 550 4MATIC off the road, you've got no one to blame but yourself.

All in all, the 2007 Mercedes-Benz E 550 4MATIC offered a surprisingly sporty driving experience for a vehicle that's not really considered a "sport sedan" in the classic sense. If there was one complaint, it was that the interior of the expensive E 550 (base price; $85,000) really paled in comparison with the more costly S 550 ($122,000). While this may be a large price differential, the materials and fit in the E 550 did not overly impress.

For the price of admission, E 550 4MATIC customers also receive the Sport Package (body kit, sport suspension, 18-inch wheels) as standard. Optional on the E 550 is the Premium Package, which includes park assist, navigation system and heated, split-folding rear seats.

The 4MATIC will never be caught hands down.
