Of course, the main focus of this simple interior is functionality. The controls are readily accessible and easy to manipulate. I would have liked a tilt/telescopic steering wheel, though; it could really help drivers of different body sizes find a good driving position. While the aforementioned dashboard-mounted shifter does not encourage manual gear shifts, the 4-speed automatic transmission does excellent work. Mated to a 2.4L, 4-cylinder gasoline engine, it shifts effectively. Acceleration times make the Grandis a good fit on North American roads (0-100 kph in 12 seconds). Incidentally, the next-generation model will feature a 5-speed autobox that reportedly offers better fuel economy. European customers can also opt for an award-winning turbodiesel engine.

Driving dynamics are commendable but far from sporty.

The ride is soft yet free from overly noticeable bodyroll. Being a front-wheel drive vehicle, the Grandis naturally suffers from a bit of understeer. However, under full load, handling becomes more balanced. That said, we're far from talking about sporty driving dynamics.

Offering good all-around visibility to the driver, this Mitsubishi easily threads its way through city traffic. The power steering is precise (although a bit too light), while stability at highway speeds is reassuring.

Will we ever see it?
As such, the Grandis will never be offered in Canada. Mr. Tomoki Yanagawa, Vice-President of Sales and Planning, recently told journalists that Mitsubishi Canada was rather focusing on importing a subcompact car like the Colt. When the next generation hits the market, however, company execs will seriously look into the possibility of bringing the Grandis to our shores, provided that the crossover segment is still very competitive and that sales forecasts justify such a move. In my opinion, Canadian Mitsubishi dealers would welcome this versatile minivan with open arms.
