Set to hit European streets in February 2007, the Nissan Qashqai was recently presented to the public at an event in Paris hosted by Nissan Motors CEO Carlos Ghosn.

Qashqai is designed to appeal to the consumer who wants a more dynamic design than a traditional C-segment car but isn't attracted to the larger SUV market.

Although most of the development for the new machine took place in Europe, significant input was provided by Nissan's engineering base in Japan. The Qashqai will be produced in Sunderland, England and exported back to Japan under the name Dualis, as well as to the Middle East and overseas.

Styling combines a sleek and elegant form similar to the Murano, but with a slightly elevated ride, pronounced wheel arches and an imposing stance.

As is common with European vehicles, a choice of gasoline or diesel engines will be available. The four options present horsepower figures between 115 and 150- the top engine in terms of power being the 2.0 litre diesel unit.

Manual, automatic or CVT transmissions are available, as is Nissans all-mode 4x4 system for added sure-footedness.

Ghosn adds "we expect Qashqai will sell more than 100,000 units a year on average across Europe - with 80% of those customers buying a Nissan for the first time."
