A sedan just like the others... or almost

Elsewhere, the Camry Hybrid behaves just like any other sedan. For starters, the ride is comfortable and the suspension is well articulated and composed on tough roads.

However, a hybrid car means a power steering and a CVT. Personally, I'm not too fond of power steerings -- most of them eliminate the all-important feedback from the road. Fortunately, the Camry's is well tuned and still communicates decently with the driver.

Same goes for the CVT: while it often makes the engine sound irritating in other cars, the Camry's transmission is all smooth and quiet. That's enough to make peace with CVTs.

Weakness: fuel economy? No. The interior...

Some will argue that hybrids are expensive given what they promise in terms of fuel economy. Maybe: at $31,900, let alone over $35K for heated leather seats and a sunroof, the Camry Hybrid is pricier than the other midsize sedans in its class.

As far as I'm concerned, I loved the fact that I was able to cover nearly 800 kilometers on a single tank of gas. It becomes rapidly addictive, believe me!

My complaints about the Camry Hybrid are not related to the fuel economy but rather to the interior. Yes, the cabin is spacious, the seats are comfortable and the many storage compartments are useful, but the quality of the plastics on the dashboard and door panels is below my expectations. They're not soft touching at all.

Furthermore, when the temperature dropped below the freezing point, my tester's windshield had an unpleasant tendency to make sinister cracking noises.

Finally, the trunk... Don't expect to load as much cargo as in any other midsize sedan. The batteries take a lot of space and significantly reduce the cargo volume. You'll think twice about offering your brother-in-law to drive him to the airport with all his suitcases.

Come to think of it, that may be a benefit...
