40 years ago, Ford unveiled the 1968 Shelby Cobra GT500KR. Fittingly, the 2008 Shelby GT500KR is to be presented to the press and public alike at the 2007 edition of the New York Auto Show, 40 years after the original.

Based on a Ford Shelby GT500, the KR gains an extra 40 hp and 10 lb/ft of torque through a Ford Racing Power Upgrade Pack which basically consists of a revised ignition and throttle calibration and a cold air intake system. The estimated total of 540 hp and 510 lb/ft of torque are channelled through a Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission and 3.73:1 rear axle ratio. The new shifter, topped with a white ball, has 25 percent shorter throws than the setup on the "standard" GT500.

The show cars sports Shelby-designed 20-inch forged and polished aluminium wheels with custom center caps. When production begins, the KRs will arrive with an 18-inch version of the design. The lower front fascia houses a pair of functional brake ducts that effectively cool the 14-inch vented Brembo front brakes. The side stripes are nearly identical to the original KR; even the font used for the 'GT500KR' is lifted from the original '68. The classic LeMans-style striping also adds to this bad-boy's muscular demeanour.

Only 1,000 of these very special Shelbys will be produced so place your order now! By the way, the GT500 was the most powerful Mustang ever produced. The GT500KR is the new King of the Road.
