Access to the front seats is made easier thanks to a large door opening and big grab handles. The seats are very comfortable over the long run, providing wide cushions and great side support. Finding a good driving position is quite easy. Plus, on the road, the cabin remains very quiet.

Interior fit and finish is commendable, while materials are well matched. The controls are nicely positioned and the climate control system is really effective.

This is one of the finest dashboards in the full-size pickup segment.

Comfortable on the road

Multiple engine choices are available with the Sierra. My tester came with the 5.3L V8 producing 315 horsepower and 338 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission, it delivered decent though not eye-popping accelerations. Still, for most normal folks, this mill is perfect. Besides, it benefits from GM's Active Fuel Management technology to improve its efficiency: this cylinder-deactivation system proves a lot more useful on the highway than in the city.

The 5.3L can also run on E85... provided that your local gas station is one of the few in Canada to supply this eco-friendly fuel (which, incidentally, is costlier than regular gasoline and increases fuel consumption by 25 percent). As far as my tester is concerned, the combined city-highway fuel economy was 16.3 L/100 km.

Ride comfort is one of the strengths of the Sierra. The vehicle has virtually no tendency to hop, even in the back. The transmission is impressively flexible and smooth-shifting. Sitting in your lofty driving perch, you feel totally safe. What's more, the Sierra handles nicely and parks quite easily thanks to large side- and rear-view mirrors.

With the Trailering Special Equipment Package (including extra-capacity transmission cooling), this GMC can tow some seriously heavy loads. The 7-wire harness with independently fused trailering circuits is mated to a 7-way sealed connector on the rear bumper. Equipped with 4WD and the 5.3L V8, the Sierra's maximum towing capacity is rated at 3,765 kilos (8,300 lbs).

The Sierra offers a remarkably smooth ride.
