If there is a weakness in this otherwise outstanding powerplant, it is the engine's languid low-end torque that leads to downshifting to maintain speed on minor inclines and downshifts to achieve moderate speed increments. But really, this is nit-picky stuff at best. The engine and transmission are in such sync that most drivers won't notice the gear changes, just the need to step a little deeper into the throttle from time to time.

Tepid as the exterior styling may be, interior design work exceeds expectations.

If a quiet cabin adds pleasure to a motoring trip, the Santa Fe is sure to please. This vehicle delivers "quiet" beyond what its frugal pricing would suggest. Ride quality is good but does not exceed expectations in the way that the other dimensions do. Handling and braking are consistent with those of a well-engineered mid-market CUV.

Full safety across the board enhances Santa Fe value
All 2008 Santa Fe trim levels receive as standard equipment: front airbags, front seat side-mounted airbags, full length side curtain airbags, four-wheel antilock disc brakes, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and an electronic Traction Control System (TCS).

The Santa Fe offers tremendous value to those in the market for a capable crossover that performs beyond expectations within its modest price range.
