Up front, visibility is great thanks to a high driving position and generous greenhouse. Helping drivers is a set of front and rear cameras. Since the hood is pretty high and massive, Lexus had the brilliant idea of automatically activating the front camera at idle (like when you're waiting at a traffic light), thus providing a clear view of what's immediately in front of the vehicle. The outside mirrors are decently sized and they automatically fold when you lock the doors with the remote.

Powerful like a yacht!
The 2008 Lexus LX is a true heavyweight at 2,719 kilos (5,995 pounds). That's almost three full tons! Therefore, it needs an equally massive engine. Enters a 5.7L V8 producing 383 horsepower and delivering 0-100 kph accelerations in 7.4 seconds -- quite a feat for such a burly SUV with a drag coefficient of 0.35.

While engine performance is great, you'll become rapidly acquainted with the employees of gas stations despite the 93-liter fuel tank, especially if you keep abusing the throttle. Even in normal driving conditions, fuel consumption is fairly high, as my average of 14.3 L/100 km will attest. I can't imagine the result if I had towed a trailer, let alone used the maximum towing capacity of 3,855 kilos (8,500 pounds).

The steering does a good job on the road. Meanwhile, the suspension is slightly firm yet soft enough to neutralize road imperfections. Handling is decent and you feel quite safe behind the wheel of the lofty LX. You get the impression that the vehicle is firmly planted on the road while remaining smooth at the same time.

Braking performance is solid. Again, the LX feels nimble and safe on the road. There's also a host of advanced safety features to boost confidence and peace of mind.
