Unlike the previous Maserati coupes, this new car has been designed by Pininfarina instead of Giorgetto Giugiaro from ItalDesign. One way or another, the new Coupe is absolutely gorgeous and has grown in size. It shares its basic platform with the Quattroporte sedan.

The GranTurismo is powered by the same Ferrari-sourced 405-hp 4.2L V8 engine currently under the bonnet of the flagship sedan. It is altogether possible that the new GT will inherit the new 4.7L Maserati V8 that is presently used in the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione. The car will also make use of the Quattroporte's ZF six-speed automatic transmission also found in the Jaguar XK and XKR. Steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters will be optional.

To ensure that GranTurismo will outperform competitors like the Bentley Continental GT, Maserati split the car's weight 49% up front and 51% at the rear.

The new 2+2 Coupe could be followed by a Spyder and a hardtop convertible in the future. The 2008 GranTurismo is expected to arrive in September. Maserati anticipates selling 300 to 400 cars in the U.S. for the first model year.
