The Legacy continues to grow
The transmission also incorporates automatic throttle blipping on downshifts to enhance sportiness. In testing, upshifts and downshifts were extremely quick and smooth. The paddle-shifters felt a bit heavy compared to other units out there, but this impression would likely fade with familiarity.

The GT Spec.B motors on with the turbocharged 2.5L 4-cylinder rated at 243 hp and 241 lb-ft of torque.

Better handling for rougher roads

A key strength of the Subaru Legacy over the years has been its handling over uneven or slick surfaces. This characteristic has been boosted by new suspension geometry and other revisions designed to improve quick transitions and handling on bumpy roads. When combined with the manufacturer's rally-proven symmetrical full-time all-wheel drive, it's a formula for superior traction and handling, regardless of the circumstances.

Driving over the paved and gravel roads on the drive route, the Legacy's impeccable handling revealed itself. In particular, as soon as we entered a low-traction corner with too much speed, all four wheels slid at the same time. This enabled the driver to quickly and easily regain control by letting off the gas or touching the brakes--very confidence-inspiring.

Interior upgrades complete the picture
Taking as its cue the sleek interior of the Subaru Tribeca, the interior of the new Legacy has been upgraded with a new dashboard, trim and steering wheel. The wheel, featuring a sportier look, now incorporates buttons for the audio system and cruise control. The wheel also telescopes and features the aforementioned paddle shifters on models with the 5-speed auto transmission.

All in all, the interior reflected the continuing refinement of Subaru models over the years. While I'm not a massive fan of fake wood treatment, the pieces used in the new Legacy seemed decent enough. The car tested had a few trim-fitting issues, but it was a pre-production model, so these will no doubt be addressed before the Legacy hits showrooms.

The Legacy's interior has also been refreshed.
