Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive system is currently the best-selling hybrid powertrain on the planet. Yet, it struggles to move this heavy SUV in convincing fashion. Despite a combined output of 270 horsepower, accelerations are rather slow and devoid of liveliness. As one driver puts it: "You definitely don't want to be in a real hurry because sprinting and overtaking slower vehicles seem to take forever." Overall performance might be decent and fuel-efficient, but the technology does not appear to be advanced enough.

Another driver found out the limits of the Highlander Hybrid in the city: "The hybrid system is disappointing, he said. I feel like the only time where the gasoline engine shuts down is when I'm idling, say, at a traffic light." Fuel economy is no doubt interesting, but the result could be even better if the electric motor was capable of sustaining speeds of up to 40 km/h.

The steering is precise though not very responsive. The automatic transmission is nicely calibrated but, once again, the feeling is uninspiring. What really surprised most of us, actually, is the fact that the Highlander handles just like a car and proves equally pleasant to drive. Handling is also very good and reminiscent of a sedan's.

On the flip side, the suspension needs some tweaking; it's a bit too soft for city driving (by SUV standards) and not comfortable enough for long-distance trips. For the most part, though, this setup feels relatively flexible.

The brakes are a good fit while lateral visibility is excellent. As for rearward visibility, you have to be careful when backing up, especially between two vehicles.

Final verdict
In the end, the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid receives mixed reviews. The hybrid technology is quite capable, but it clearly lacks a little something to ensure total satisfaction. Greater freedom in electric mode would also help sway potential buyers. Based on its overall character and driving dynamics, we'd have to say that the Highlander Hybrid feels much more like a car than a sport utility vehicle.
