New muscle and size for Highlander, but highway handling fails to impress
Hardware
Power on all Highlander models comes from a 3.5 litre V6 with free-breathing dual cam, 4-valve-per-cylinder heads for optimized delivery of power and mileage. A five-speed automatic transmission with manual mode is included. Towing capacity is increased this year to 5,000 lbs, and the extra power also provides more-than-ample kick for passing. Mileage averaged about 13.5L / 100km, which is very respectable given the size.

The 5-speed automatic transmission makes good use of the 270 horsepower.

Why Highlander?

If you're shopping in this market and price range, you've got some homework to do, because the selection is immense. Toyota's built a reputation for making top quality, reliable machines, evidenced by their sales leadership position.

If these things hold importance to you, or you're looking to upgrade from a smaller Rav4 or in need something more capable than a Sienna, then pick one out, throw on a set of snow tires, and start planning some wintertime trips with friends and family.
