The 335d, on the other hand, doesn't have that unpleasant signature. True, you can still hear a slightly distinctive sound -- from outside, at idle, and from inside, when hammering the throttle -- but BMW engineers managed to preserve the interior serenity of the 3-Series.
An innovative technology transforms the perception of Rudolf's invention. It starts with the 3.0-liter, inline 6-cylinder, twin-turbo of the 335d, which was designed following the Munich-based automaker's Blue Performance strategy (as in blue sky, not blue smoke!) for the development of "clean" diesel engines.
This highly-advanced mill uses a common-rail system with piezo-electric injectors to maximize fuel economy. These special injectors are extremely precise when injecting fuel into the combustion chamber. They also reduce the amount of pre-injection fuel to a minimum.
Urea catalysis
In order to limit toxic emissions, BMW incorporated a urea-based solution in the catalytic converter. Exhaust gases go through the three chambers of this sophisticated system: the close-mounted oxidization chamber, which captures some of the carbon oxides and hydrocarbons, the particle filter, which reduces soot and large carbon particles, and finally the selective catalytic reduction chamber.
Aqueous urea is injected in the latter in variable amounts and mixes up with the toxic particles. The ensuing chemical reaction reduces the level of nitrogen oxides (NOx) by converting them into nitrogen and water vapor -- no harm for Mother Nature.
