Lean AND mean
None of the 3-Series’ rivals offer a diesel engine option in North America right now. The only luxury sedan that boasts similar performance and fuel economy numbers is the 2010 Lexus GS 450h, which retails for $71,600.

The 2009 BMW 335d starts at $49,700 and isn’t available with all-wheel drive or a manual transmission.

The conclusion
The 335d is an interesting choice for those who like diesel engines and who want a no-sacrifice sedan that’s both quick and fuel-efficient. But since speed freaks can chew on a 300-hp 335i for about the same money, I tend to think that a 3-Series with a more modest diesel engine would be a more logical choice.

I’d be willing to wait a little and see if such a model will turn up in America, and I’m optimistic that it will.
