A V8-first for Hyundai
Next to rear-wheel drive, the most exciting aspect of Hyundai's new ride is the availability of a V8 engine. This is a completely new unit that incorporates the latest in technology, such as a two-step Variable Induction System (VIS) and Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT).

The new mill is engineered to run on both premium and regular juice. On hi-test the 4.6-litre engine will generate 375 horsepower @ 6,500 rpm and 333 pound-feet of torque at 3,500 rpm. Regular petrol drops horsepower by seven ponies and torque by nine pound-feet.

The DOHC V6 Lambda engine displaces 3.8 litres while producing 290 horsepower @ 6,200 rpm and 264 pound-feet of torque @ 4,500 rpm. It also benefits from Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT).

Both engines are connected to automatic 6-speed transmissions. The V6 finds itself mated to an Aisin-made unit while the V8 is affixed to a more robust ZF product in order to handle the V8's greater output. During testing, both transmissions provided remarkably smooth cog changes at appropriate intervals. Both transmissions feature a manual mode but paddle shifting is not available.

Large brakes, stiff chassis and multi-link suspension augment handling
Engineers at Hyundai developed a chassis structure for the Genesis incorporating stiffness that eclipses many of its competitors. Onto this rigid foundation they hung a five-link front suspension arrangement and a similar multi-link setup at the rear. Sophisticated dampers were wisely chosen to enhance both ride and handling qualities.

Large brake rotors front and rear fortify braking ability while an Electronic Stability Control (ESC) program works unobtrusively to assist in keeping the Genesis under control when madly pushed in the corners or in the event of emergency maneuvers.

It looks the part but does it walk the walk?
The specs and stats presented to the journalists attending Hyundai's launch of the Genesis raised more than a few eyebrows. On paper, the car exceeds many benchmarks established by much more expensive machinery in the performance sedan segment.
