Luxury less Complicated
One car – one drivetrain
Even buying the ES350 is an uncomplicated affair thanks the lack of engine and transmission choices. The only engine available is Toyota’s beautifully balanced 3.5-litre DOHC V6 that dispatches 272 horsepower, and employs Variable Valve Timing with intelligence or VVT-i as Toyota refers to it.

Taming the generous power supply and directing it to the front wheels is a six-speed automatic transmission featuring electronic manual-mode operation. This unit is a bit of a hidden gem in that it fulfills its duty with seamless transparency.

Driving delight

A vehicle’s driving characteristics are the true sum of its worth, not the ticket hanging from the rearview on sale day. And by that rationale, the ES350 is worth plenty more than its entry fee of $39,950 provided that “serenity now” is the mantra.

The near silent operation of this car and its smooth, unruffled ride dynamics form the foundation upon which other attributes build to produce a vehicle that is tremendously relaxing and pleasurable to drive.

Those seeking comfort and calm over performance and excitement in their upscale ride will appreciate the full bliss of Lexus’s 2009 ES350. Despite its tranquil orientation, this car is not a slouch on the road. Its engine abounds with refined punch, which is capable of propelling the comfy sedan with surprising vigor.

Plenty of safety and protection
While not exactly exhilarating, the ES350’s handling and braking responses are reassuring and competent.

Nothing occurs unpredictably or perilously when emergency manoeuvres are undertaken, thanks in part to a vehicle stability control program, traction control, brake assist and antilock disc brakes, all of which are fitted as standard equipment.

An assortment of airbags, including front and rear head/side curtain airbags, is also furnished as standard fare.

Plenty of luxury

The list of standard content isn’t all about safety and protection, it includes items meant to pamper occupants as well as keep them from harm. Spoiling comes in the form of 8-speaker premium audio, dual-zone climate control, smart-key with push button start, 10-way power seats and loads of leather.

If more indulgence is desired, the ES350 can be taken downtown with several luxury-laden option packages. Unfortunately, the full load is accompanied by a price tag hitting $50K.

ES350 wrap
Here’s a luxury car that ascribes to simplicity while delivering a genteel driving experience that’s easy on the wallet due to its EPA rating of 10.9 and 7.2L/100km of city and highway driving respectively.

The ES350 is polished pleasure for those who like their miles to silently slide by unnoticed. Count me in.
