More and more surprises
The ML320 BlueTEC is a Mercedes-Benz product and, still, it far exceeded my expectations in terms of driving dynamics. The suspension offers perfect balance between on-road comfort and off-road performance. It does a great job in corners, maintaining the big VUS extremely stable. A true sport star, the ML is dangerously close to the best-handling competitors on the planet, like the BMW X5.

Agility on the road is enhanced by a variable-assist, rack-and-pinion steering that I found very precise for an SUV. This Mercedes feels dynamic and lively behind the wheel and it will certainly suit all driving styles. The brand's 4MATIC all-wheel drive system comes standard with the ML320.

The 7-speed automatic transmission is another surprise, albeit a negative one. It's not inherently bad, but it did leave me wanting for more. Gear shifts are a bit slow even though the ratios are nicely calibrated. That said, this autobox is exactly what you should expect from a midsize SUV in normal driving conditions.

Tons of positives
Mercedes-Benz has largely addressed the issues that affected the first-generation ML. The new model's build quality, both inside and out, is exemplary to say the least. Moreover, there's a sweet mix of prestige and brand tradition, just like in the good old days.

Comfort is princely and the supportive seats offer an ideal driving position.

Material selection is superior in every way. Like all products from Stuttgart, the ML320 boasts a ton of advanced yet user-friendly features. Comfort is princely and the supportive seats offer an ideal driving position.

Overall, there's plenty of room inside for passengers and their luggage. Access to the cargo area is easy, especially with the generous opening and power remote liftgate. The latter proves helpful when you have your hands full.

Granted, the wide array of electronics means long-term maintenance costs can become significantly high, but consider this: the reliability record of Mercedes-Benz vehicles has significantly improved over the last few years.

Competition
The diesel-powered ML320 BlueTEC ($61,400) has virtually nothing to worry about right now. Its sole competitor is the BMW X5 xDrive35d ($62,200). However, several new threats will soon emerge in the form of the Volkswagen Touareg 2 V6 TDI (about $58,000), Porsche Cayenne V6 Diesel (about $65,000) as well as hybrids like the Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited ($54,360) and Lexus RX 450h (about $55,000).

Wrapping up the ML
The 2009 Mercedes-Benz ML320 BlueTEC 4MATIC is a competent performer like we seldom happen to see. People looking for a multi-talented premium midsize SUV that shows restraint in the fuel consumption department must absolutely take a look at this German hero. The ML320 BlueTEC is attractive, practical, efficient and definitely deserving of a spot among the shiniest stars, especially the blue ones.
