Not so long ago, Subaru was the only manufacturer to offer rally and performance enthusiasts across Canada a compact sedan that truly met their expectations. In recent years, however, the country has seemingly become a battlefield for a lot of companies.
The Impreza must now ward off the attacks from Mitsubishi's Lancer Evolution and the like. In order to retain its competitive edge, Subaru decided to offer a new, difference-making powertrain for 2009... much to the chagrin of all those who've just purchased a 2008 model.
In terms of styling, the all-new WRX265 builds on the regular Impreza's fairly generic design by incorporating typical Subaru performance upgrades. There's the famous hood scoop, obviously, but also aerodynamic side ground effects and a larger, roofline-integrated spoiler. The 17-inch, rally-style alloy wheels are a direct nod to the car's spectacular roots.
The interior is dark, plain and definitely not lively. Emphasized by a wide grey plastic trim, the dashboard means business, offering exemplary ergonomics. The controls are within easy reach, making for intuitive manipulation on a daily basis. While plastics are overabundant, their quality is pretty good.
This Impreza is clearly geared for driving enthusiasts. Therefore, it lacks some comfort creatures while the navigation system is optional. On the other hand, you get everything you need to maximize your fun behind the wheel, including an appropriately powerful stereo.
The sedan looks smaller than it actually is; yet, interior room is limited -- both up front and in the back. Long drives will feel a bit excruciating as a result.
