All-wheel drive is back
Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS are standard across the lineup. Meanwhile, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) is standard on AWD-equipped XRS models and optional on XR models. Toyota chose to bring back the all-wheel drive; however, only comprehensive winter tests will allow us to assess the true effectiveness of the V-Flex system, not to mention the related electronic nannies. The brake pedal is firm yet easy to modulate, while the four-wheel disc configuration ensures convincingly composed stops.

AWD is back -- much to the delight of many buyers.

All models also come standard with a power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering that proves to be precise, light and pleasant to handle. These attributes are backed by a lighter setup due to the elimination of the traditional steering pump and hydraulic ducts.

As for tire size, Base and XR models ride on 205/55R16s while XRS models get 215/45ZR18s (a compact spare tire comes standard). Driving enthusiasts will appreciate the 18-inch wheels during cornering maneuvers. That being said, our brief session on immaculate roads did not allow us to gauge the impact of these two tire models on ride comfort.

In order to satisfy the young customers targeted by the Matrix, Toyota wisely upgraded the entertainment systems available. Both the standard CD/MP3/WMA radio and premium JBL unit with 6-CD changer include an auxiliary input jack. Bluetooth connectivity is optional. Surprisingly, heated seats are nowhere to be found.

All in all, the Matrix's overhaul is a successful one. The new generation enhances the unique styling of the previous model; it may not appeal to everyone, but it sure is distinctive. With the return of AWD models, the Matrix is once again a worthy choice for those after a modern, well-made, versatile compact car that can tackle winter conditions with confidence. The Subaru Impreza, Dodge Caliber and Suzuki SX4 now have another strong rival to contend with.

The interior has been updated, too.
