Turbocharged VW GLI takes 'cheap' kicks upscale
In all, handling and braking feels a ‘just-right’ match for the 200 horsepower engine. More generously-powered competitors may spank the GLI in a drag race-- but the VW does a magnificent job of putting power down when exiting a corner.

Torque steer and drama are nil. Where other machines squeal, squirm, and vaporize tires, the GLI pulls cleanly around with minimal fuss. It all adds up for a car that’s fun, fast, and entertaining-- without being overwhelming or unnecessarily harsh.

The GLI is worth further investigation.

The Tricky Part

Things get tricky when one considers competing models that offer more grunt for less money. In fact, with the trick direct-shift gearbox (DSG), sunroof and upgraded wheels, the GLI tested was priced deep into the $35,000 range.

It’s no secret that plenty of delicious cars exist at this price level.

If your priorities are cheap and fast, machines like the Cobalt SS and Caliber SRT-4 are still king of the ring. However, if you’re leaning towards something more upscale and high-tech, the GLI is worth further investigation.

It might not be the market’s obvious bang-for-the-buck leader in terms of raw speed-- but it is the most affordable factory-tuned German sedan on the road.
