The 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI has just won the Green Car Journal's Green Car of the Year award. The editors of the Green Car Journal had chosen five finalists, but in the end the Jetta was recognized as the best of the best.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says the Jetta TDI is capable of an average fuel consumption rating of 6.19 L / 100 km in the city and 5.35 L / 100 km on the highway.
Earlier this year, the Jetta TDI set a new fuel efficiency world record with an average of 4 L / 100 km during a trek through 48 American States.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, if one out of three vehicles in the U.S. were powered by a diesel engine, 1.4 million barrels of oil would be saved each day, which is the amount shipped daily from Saudi Arabia.
The 2009 Jetta TDI is also eligible for a $1,300 tax rebate, valid in the U.S. only.
