What the Challenger R/T has, however, is an engine soundtrack that’s arguably the best of the three. Oh, and don’t expect a fuel consumption average under 14 L/100 km.
Equipped with the Super Track Pack, the R/T Classic is quite a handler for its size and weight. The performance brakes, suspension and steering contribute to the car’s tossability, on par with the Ford and Chevy. And yet the ride isn’t punishing.
The 2010 Dodge Challenger R/T starts at $35,395, while the R/T Classic costs $37,390. Our test car includes the $2,000 6-speed manual gearbox, the $500 Super Track Pack, the $1,375 Electronics Convenience Group, the $775 xenon headlights, the $850 MOPAR Interior Convenience Group, the $1,550 Media Centre 730N including navigation, the $195 Sound Group II, $1,400 destination charge and $100 A/C tax, for a grand total of $46,135.
In comparison, a similarly-equipped Camaro 2SS costs $44,800, although a navigation system isn’t available, while an equivalent 2011 Mustang GT costs $44,399.
Despite being short on firepower compared to its rivals, we like the Challenger a lot, because it’s the best representation of the original Pony Car. Okay, I wasn’t even conceived when the first Challenger came out, but cars like this modern-day Dodge Pony Car makes me wish I was born 20 years earlier.
