But the SVT Raptor’s main shortcoming is its price. Our test truck has a base price of $48,299, but with all the options, you’re looking at a $53,849 off-roader. With the new 6.2-litre engine, however, the price has climbed another $2,000.

Fifty grand for a trail-bound pickup truck might seem expensive. You do get a very capable machine, mind you, but that’s a lot of dough. There are no direct competitors, although the only other pickup that comes close is the Ram 2500 Power Wagon which costs about the same, but isn’t quite as hardcore as the SVT.

You probably won’t spot Raptors very often, because they’ll never sell in significant numbers. Its off-road prowess is undeniable, but we just feel as though its natural habitat is jumping desert sand dunes rather than hitting the trails. As a daily driver, its size, weight and price limit its appeal a little.

If you want the toughest, meanest, most attention-grabbing and badass pickup around, though, the F-150 SVT Raptor is the King of the Hill.
