To wit: Sweetie could bring home three or four mature shrubs with eight bags of soil, stop by the dry cleaner to pick up four freshly-cleaned winter coats and Junior’s once-smelly hockey bag, grab her mother, sister and aunt for a cup of coffee and even load a month’s worth of grocery — all in the same trip! The only real problem is parking. At just over five metres long, the Odyssey clearly doesn’t fit into small-car spots.

I particularly liked the flexibility of the rear confines and the fact that you can make the third-row seat magically disappear into the floor. No need to see a chiropractor every two weeks for strained muscles or bruised vertebrae either; the seats are totally comfortable and back pain-free. Also, the commanding driving position and generous glass area provide excellent visibility all around and reduce blind spots. Up front is a highly-ergonomic, cascading dashboard.

Daddy’s time!
Admittedly, the 2010 Honda Odyssey isn’t the vehicle that benefits the most from Honda’s Formula One expertise and technology. Nevertheless, it relies on a proven engine that does everything it can to avoid delivering a tasteless, lifeless experience behind the wheel. In fact, I’d say the driver can find reasonable stimulation, here.

Under the hood, you’ll find something familiar, namely Honda’s 244-horsepower 3.5-litre V6. (Photo: Philippe Champoux/Auto123.com)

With car-like driving dynamics, a squat stance and a relatively-low ground clearance of about six inches, the big Odyssey seemingly hugs the road and displays great handling (by minivan standards, of course).

This is backed by a precise steering offering generous feedback as well as a very compliant suspension. On the other hand, the brakes lack both strength and endurance. Remember to anticipate your braking manoeuvres, especially with loads of people and luggage in the back.

Under the hood, you’ll find something familiar, namely Honda’s 244-horsepower 3.5-litre V6. Efficient and reliable as always, this mill stands out as a flexible performer. It seems to operate effortlessly in all conditions, never bucking or hesitating. Fuel consumption somewhat disappoints with a slightly above-par average of 11 L/100 km.

As for the automatic transmission, I’d argue that it works quite smoothly, so much in fact that you barely notice the shifts.

A family consensus
Choosing the 2010 Honda Odyssey to meet your family needs couldn’t make more sense. Seating and storage prove very generous, comfort will appeal to anyone and the brand’s reliability makes the whole ownership experience stress-free.
