Refined Performance Combined with Upscale Luxury
There’s plenty of low-end bravado in this engine without the need to surpass its mid-range power band. And it’s actually in the mid-range that I find this mill most appealing. Torque is plentiful and the accompanying exhaust howl is more Lamborghini Gallardo than Japanese coupe—and I should know.

I have a neighbour that makes a point of enriching everyone’s ears with his Lambo’s screaming exhaust note, whether you want to hear it or not! My teenage son is quite convinced that with sufficient rpm in first gear, I can replicate Ben’s Gallardo with the G37x. I think he may be right but there are a total of seven gears in the G37’s autobox, and I intend to use them all.

7-speed autobox keeps the hustle alive

My tester was equipped with an automatic transmission, which wasn’t out of place given the Infiniti’s upscale target market. The performance purists may be more suited to Nissan’s wicked 370Z. What did raise my eyebrows slightly was the absence of paddle shifters despite my tester being the upscale AWD model tagged at $48,800.

The Sport Package will add paddle shifters along with sport-tuned suspension but at $48,800, paddle shifters should be included independent of the Sport Package.

Sans paddles, fun can still be had using the shifter in its electronic manual mode. The engine blips to match revs when down shifting while upshifts occur with acceptable urgency. When driving conservatively, this autobox likes to make maximum use of its bigger gears in order to improve fuel economy.

This tendency can sometimes leave the engine bogging slightly before a smaller gear injects itself into the operation. I didn’t really mind though, for relaxed cruising, the setup works very efficiently. A Sport Mode would be a nice feature for keeping the drivetrain a little more caffeinated when hitting the back roads.

And it’s on these roads where the G37x can really inspire.

Tight handling doesn’t diminish ride quality
I’m not one that would ever order the G37x with the optional sport-tuned suspension. The setup I experienced in my tester was perfect. To inject any further rigidity into the ride would spoil it in my view.

The car is exceptionally responsive on the road. It sticks like glue and telegraphs its intentions to the driver in clear terms. Steering inputs are acted upon instantly, and despite trying, I couldn’t upset the G’s balance and predictability.
