The new LR4 is essentially an LR3 that has been pushed up. Well, in fact, it's a little more than that. The LR4 is the evolution of the LR3 in the sense that it has moved further upscale, closer than ever to the range-topping Range Rover.

Visual differences between the LRs are limited to a new grille, front bumper, and headlamps. The taillights, along with the new headlights, now contain LEDs which are all the rage at the moment. The cabin is much improved over the previous trucks as materials, fit and finish are even more luxurious. Dash layout and ergonomics follow suit as the previous infotainment system controls are replaced by a more user-friendly touch-screen setup. Front and second-row seats are revised and new interior colours are now on the menu.

The most noticeable changes are actually not exactly visible but are immediately noticeable. Gone is the gas-guzzling underpowered 4.0L V6. The previous V8, a 4.4L unit, has been replaced by a new 5.0L unit that raises power up to near supercharged 4.2L levels previously available with the Range Rovers. Putting out 375 hp and just as much torque, the LR4 reaches 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds, only 7 tenths of a second off from the Sport Supercharged. As this powerplant is shared with Jaguar, we can expect a Supercharged version in the near future which should develop upwards of 500 hp.

The LR4 benefits from a plethora of new technologies and gizmos that vary from a smart alternator that disables battery charging while the vehicle is accelerating (one of many tricks to improve fuel economy) to an available surround camera system that uses five separate digital cameras to monitor the ground around the vehicle.

On road manners should be ameliorated as major mechanical components such as braking, steering, and suspension systems have been revised extensively. This, of course, does not affect the Land Rover's legendary off-road capabilities as the LR4 maintains the adjustable air suspension and terrain response system. The latter controls all matters of braking, stability, hill descent and climb assist features allowing the Land Rover to crawl over all save for the Great Wall of China.

Pricing for the new LR4 starts at $59,990, a $6,000 premium over the outgoing LR3, which is reasonable considering the increased content and power. Options range from $180 for roof rails all the way to $10,800 for the HSE LUX package with seating for 7. It is available in dealers now.
