Outlander XLS a unique, youthful and sporty crossover
It’d be superheroic to call the Outlander a total handling weapon, though the S-AWC system should provide enthusiast drivers with plenty of entertainment value all year round. The steering loads up nicely in corners too-- and the relatively stiff suspension eliminates much of the confidence-crushing body-roll common in softer machines.

Ultimately, those who enjoy sporty driving or the odd high-speed corner will find the Outlander XLS surprisingly lively. Add in good brake feel, pleasing engine performance, taut steering, and you’ve got a crossover that’s actually more fun to drive than it needs to be.

Gripes?
Complaints were limited mainly to the suspension, which can turn in a jarring ride over rougher surfaces in exchange for its spirited handling feel. Additionally, the touch-screen navigation and audio system’s display outputs look dated, and the controls can be frustrating to use. Your writer was left wishing for a USB interface for playback of his tuneage, too.

End of the day, if you’re after a crossover ute that’s uniquely equipped, unique to look at and features a slick drivetrain and above-average dynamics, the Outlander XLS is worth a family test-drive.
