On the road, the Matrix is astonishingly nimble. Although light at first, the electric power-assisted steering picks up just enough slack. Braking performance will make just about everyone happy as the pedal is none-to-firm or spongy.
Surprisingly, the fully independent suspension (only on XRS and AWD) does a wonderful job of keeping comfort and sportiness on an equal priority level. A long sweeping right-hand closing radius curve greets me on my way to work every day and I was impressed with the Toyota's stability. The P215/45R17 tires and wheels may have a roll to play in this equation.
On the top of my list
The Matrix XR AWD is in a category all its own. At $23,470, it is the only vehicle that offers AWD, a trunk, some guts and decent room for four. The Suzuki SX4 JX AWD is less expensive at $21,195 ($22,295 with auto) but you'll notice that I enumerated a few elements such as guts and trunk room... Otherwise, the Toyota is on its own. Closest options are the Honda CR-V, Subaru Outback or Ford Escape but their retail prices are at least $5,000 higher.
For this reason alone, I would seriously consider the Matrix. Having lived with AWD in the winter, I can without a doubt say that once you've had a taste, you will not go back. Plus, the Matrix is a Toyota...
