However, once the rear seat backs are folded down, you get a cargo capacity that, though not the most impressive in the class (1,600 litres), remains substantial enough to justify the “utility” in Sport Utility Vehicle.

On the comfort front, the Tiguan scores big points. Its large bucket seats and firm cushions offer much appreciated lateral support in corners, where this tall car is subject to some rolling. Also, the ergonomic layout of the dash and steering wheel, both tilting and telescopic, creates a comfortable driving position.

As for rear passengers, they benefit from very spacious, slightly elevated seating. These spots are perfectly suited to adults.

Bring on the torque
The Tiguan’s 200-head stable translates into 0-100 km/h acceleration in a little over 8 seconds. The mill is also distinctive in that it produces its maximum torque at very low engine speeds, i.e., 1,700 rpm. That would make it ideal for dealing with heavy rush hour traffic, were it not for the turbocharger that prevents a linear acceleration curve – and how.

On the flip side, the steering is precise, the brakes are easy to measure out and the suspension efficiently absorbs the road’s imperfections. The Tiguan also offers great front and side visibility thanks to a belt line that isn’t too swooping.

What’s more, to optimize the limited rearward visibility, a problem for all these types of machines, the Highline can be equipped with a reverse camera that projects images on the navigation screen. These two features are part of the optional Technology package. Though the system would work better if the captured images didn’t appear two to three seconds AFTER you put the car into reverse!

But minor gripes such as this really aren’t enough to curb buyer enthusiasm, and more and more drivers are opting for this German ute.
