Fuel ratings are posted at 12.9L/100km in the city and 8.1 on the highway. Keep in mind that the 4.2 Coupe’s ratings with a 6-speed automatic transmission are 12.8 and 8.9 L/100km, respectively.

Passenger comfort is always a priority, as both versions of the S5 feature 3-zone automatic climate control, rain-sensing wipers, heated front seats, Nappa leather upholstery, Bluetooth integration and SIRIUS satellite radio.

Though a hardtop would provide better insulation against weather and noise, it often takes up more room for storage and adds weight. The S5’s power soft top neatly folds away with still a generous amount of storage left in the trunk. The back seat splits and folds so that items like golf clubs or skis will still fit under the soft top compartment.

The special Audi Acoustic Roof is said to reduce noise levels to near hardtop levels, but I still found the interior a bit on the noisy side when the top was up. I can’t honestly say I noticed a major difference when compared to other hardtop convertibles.

The rear glass window is a descent size and therefore offers good outward visibility. As with most convertibles, make sure your mirrors are adjusted properly because there is a noticeable blind spot over your shoulder at the C-pillar.

I have only one major complaint with this car. If you plan to put the top up or down while passengers are sitting in the back seat, be warned: As the soft top folds, a section of the roof folds directly into the area of the head rest. As a result, back-seat passengers could likely get hit by the roof while it’s in motion.

Another complaint is the two cupholders in the centre console. One is decently sized, while the second one is tiny. I had a problem putting a small-size Slurpee in it.

The 2011 Audi S5 Cabriolet starts at $68,600, while the Coupe checks in at $60,500. The BMW 335i hardtop starts at close to $69,000, while the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet will set you back just under $70,000. One must-have option for the S5 is $1,500 sport differential, which includes Audi Drive Select and its 3 driving modes (Normal, Sport, Comfort) so that you really can get the most enjoyable driving experience no matter what your mood.
