Oh, and by the way, visibility is just as poor as the coupe's. Your best move is to go topless.
Mean power under the hood
No self-respecting Camaro would be complete without a big, potent engine under the hood, which is why the high-end SS model banks on a 400-horsepower V8. A more modest V6 is available, too.
The automatic transmission I tested delivers quick shifts even in some of the most challenging road conditions. As for the manual gearbox, also available with the Camaro SS, it's not quite as sharp as I would like, but I soon got used to its longish throws. And for sure, this unit allows sweet control of the power band.
The fabulous powertrain is backed by near-perfect weight distribution (52/48) contributing to great balance on the road. Handling is further enhanced by significantly-stiffer chassis elements that make up for the lack of a fixed top. The steering doesn't really seem to appreciate the extra 112 kilos of the power-folding roof system, though.
When developing the droptop, engineers wanted to preserve most the coupe's firmness. The suspension truly won me over, delivering a solid ride with a certain level of compliance and comfort. That bodes well for Sunday drives!
On the other hand, the Camaro provides clear road feedback through the steering, almost as if the latter was directly linked to the shock absorbers. Consequently, the slightest bump will be felt by the driver. The steering is nonetheless pleasant to manipulate and superbly precise.
Let's get the show rolling!
This time, it's real. Hot California sun, top down, stereo blasting and miles of open road just waiting to be gobbled up. The Camaro dances and rambles down highways and hilly roads with surprising ease - and a whole lot of attitude.
A series of short though moderate accelerations (I'm still on public roads, remember) allow me to feel the potency of the feisty SS engine and revel in its sound effects. The exhaust note could be more pronounced, however.
In the end, the much-anticipated and undoubtedly-sexy evolution of the Chevrolet Camaro is a success as it builds on the momentum of the modern coupe. I would have liked a bit more smoothness at times, but it's a Camaro for God's sake!
In the immortal words of Steppenwolf, ''Born to be wiiiiiiiild...''
