Hooray for horses!
The ZL585 clears the quarter mile in 12.65 seconds at 185 km/h; again, a hair slower than the GT500, in which we recorded a time of 12.5 seconds with the same trap speed. Under better conditions, this SLP would be quicker than the Shelby.

An optional Brembo brake package that includes cross-drilled rotors and 6-piston front calipers helps our ZL585 stop in a shorter distance than the GT500.

Alas, the SLP Camaro’s cabin isn’t as spine-tingling, but it’s not SLP’s fault. ZL585 or not, the Camaro is still stuck with a tiny greenhouse, limited rear visibility, an unexciting centre console and that deep-dish steering wheel that doesn’t seem designed for human hands. If SLP could offer a better-designed wheel, we’d certainly go for it. The hounds tooth seat patterns seem out of place in this car this virile; happily, there are several other colour schemes available.

So how much does this GT500 killer cost? Well, you must start out with a $38,445 Camaro 1SS with the RS package, and add $24,995 for the ZL585 package for a $63,440 MSRP, about the same as its GT500 rival. With all the options on our test car, though, the total climbs to $81,000 before tax.

If you want all the flash without all the cash, a ZL465 will set you back about $10,000 above the price of a Camaro SS; something to think about if, like us, you consider the stock V8’s roar being too tame. After all, the exhaust system SLP bolts underneath is called LoudMouth II, which says a lot. And before you think about swinging for a ZL1, know that it will set you back over $118,000.

Want one? Good news! An SLP Camaro can be ordered through any Chevrolet dealer. In addition, SLP backs their cars with a 5-year/160,000-km powertrain warranty, just like stock Camaros.

An SLP Camaro isn’t for everyone. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing, as only 500 ZL560 and ZL585 versions will be produced for the 2011MY, in either coupe or soon-to-be-released convertible configurations, and over 10% have been purchased already. The lesser ZL models have no production limit, so help yourself. After all, there’s no substitute for horsepower.

We’d like to thank Stefano Ciambella at SLP Performance Parts and Automobiles Paillé in Berthierville, QC for lending us the SLP Camaro ZL585.
