Sweating the details
The optional third-row seat is fairly easy to access, but there isn’t much space back there; the kids won’t complain, but your office colleagues might if you pile them in on your way to the sushi bar. Cargo space is among the most spacious of the bunch, whether the second-row seatback is in place or folded down.

The 2011 reboot isn’t limited to interior trimmings. The old 3.5-litre V6 makes way for the new 3.6-litre unit, which produces 283 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Paired with a 6-speed automatic, the R/T AWD claws its way to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds and through the quarter-mile in 15.4 seconds at 143 km/h.

The new engine is a notable improvement, as it sounds better and provides more gusto. The automatic gearbox, however, produces an occasional driveline jerk at slow speeds, which takes a bite out of its otherwise refined operation.

As for fuel economy, our journey in the Journey is resulting in an average of 12.3 L/100 km, which could honestly be better. The old V6 was worse, however, so there is an improvement here.

The Journey’s low base price remains. The SE Canada Value Package trim costs $20,995 before taxes, freight and delivery charges, and for that sum you get an intelligent key system, power heated mirrors, power windows, cruise control, wheel-mounted audio controls, a telescopic steering column, dual-zone A/C, electronic stability control and seven airbags. Not a bad deal, especially considering that Chrysler regularly offers rebates ($2,000 off as this is being written).

Our R/T AWD tester isn’t such a screaming deal, at $34,320; this includes $3,325 worth of optional features, such as the third-row seats with 3-zone climate control, navigation and backup camera and chrome-clad wheels. The model of choice should be the $25,995 SXT, which gets the V6 and 6-speed automatic, 17-inch wheels and interior trim upgrades.

For the 2011 Journey, Dodge didn’t limit itself to changing the front grille and calling it a day. They sweated the details to make their compact crossover an even sweeter deal, and we can’t help but to feel impressed by how better is has become. Good job.
