Oh, nostalgia!
Less weight, more performance
What makes the 2011 Ford Mustang so great is the amount of weight that’s been shaved off numerous components in order to increase performance. In the case of the GT500, the cast-iron engine block was replaced by an aluminum block, contributing to a whopping 102-pound weight reduction up front and a serious improvement in terms of handling.

That’s a good thing since the Mustang is somewhat handicapped by its design. You see, the center of gravity remains fairly high and anytime a heavy engine sits over the front axle, weight transfers become problematic. No such thing here: with all these pounds taken out of the equation, the car masterfully attacks corners and becomes noticeably more nimble.

In addition, all models benefit from a revised suspension that’s a lot better geared for sporty driving, effectively reducing body roll and making the Mustang more competent and more pleasant on winding roads. On a very technical track like Calabogie’s, where twists and turns come in bunches, the formidable pony happily plays its part. Upon entering corners, it no longer tries to break the line and brilliantly hugs the apex before launching into the next bend.

It must be said that Ford’s Electronic Power Assist Steering (okay, purists, stop cringing!) has a lot to do with the car’s newfound agility and docility. Sharper than a hydraulic steering, it manages not to compromise driving feel in any way. The result is superior manoeuvrability and excitement as the car feels more responsive.

The redesigned bucket seats offer remarkable support, the brakes are larger and more powerful, not to mention fade-free, and the Mustang accelerates at a blistering pace. Talk about hitting the bull’s eye!

A great selection
Obviously, the Shelby GT500 is most impressive with its 550 horsepower. The GT model can’t be denied with a 5.0-litre V8 that produces an unprecedented 412 horsepower, while the 3.7-litre V6 of the base model still proves a blast with 305 strong ponies. In fact, this powerplant will go a long way toward making the Mustang more affordable and greener than ever (only 6.4 L/100 km on the highway).
