Economic Crossover Earns an Off-Road Badge
Two engines available
The 2011 Compass comes with a choice of two 4-bangers of different size and output. The base mill is a 2.0-litre gas engine that generates 158 horsepower and 141 lb-ft of torque while returning 9.1L/100km in the city and 6.8L/100km on the highway.

Those seeking a Trail Rated version of the Compass must accept the more powerful engine, which displaces 2.4 litres while producing 172 horsepower and 165 lb-ft of torque. This powerplant utilizes dual Variable Valve Timing (VVT) to optimize its torque curve, which enhances both on-road and off-road performance.

The 2.4-litre engine is rated at 9.9L/100km and 7.7L/100km city and highway driving respectively.

Although not the quietest or most demure of mills, the larger engine gets the job done with more than adequate zeal. Overall, the engine and CVT combo deliver peppy, enjoyable performance. A relatively smooth, controlled ride ensures a pleasing experience behind the wheel.

Trail Rated is also Value Rated
What I've taken away from my time with the 2011 Trail Rated Compass is the sense that it’s a compact, yet capable, economical crossover that harbors a deep-seated “little man” complex.

Yes, it can do what most other econo-crossovers can do in terms of comfortably hauling occupants and cargo, but unlike them it can compete with the big boys in the dirt -- and for much less coin.

My Trail Rated tester, which was loaded by Compass standards, held a tag of $28,765.
