Quick, but not so fast
Like I said earlier, the 2011 Mazda2 is by no means a racing machine. The small 1.5-litre engine produces a meager 100 horsepower, which translates into pedestrian-like accelerations from 0 to 100 km/h (12+ seconds).

The cargo area isn’t particularly big. However, generous access makes it relatively easy to load a few days worth of luggage or groceries for the family. (Photo: Matthieu Lambert/Auto123.com)

It’s not all about numbers, though. The Mazda2 still feels lively and energetic thanks to an ultra-sharp steering, a pleasantly-calibrated suspension and superior soundproofing that allows the driver to focus on the road.

My four-speed autobox-equipped tester was up to the task and delivered the goods on the open road. That being said, I definitely would have liked an additional gear. The standard five-speed manual transmission also showcases interesting operation, especially about town, but it does not improve performance noticeably.

A round trip of a few hundreds of kilometres, combining city and highway driving, gave me the assurance that the little 2 will satisfy just about all its drivers.

Trim levels and features
With this new model, the company is targeting young and budget-minded consumers, which is why the 2011 Mazda2 will start at $13,995, making it one of the most affordable cars on the market. That price won’t get you many standard features, however, as only power accessories are worth mentioning in GX trim. The available Convenience Package adds air conditioning, a trip computer and keyless entry plus an upgraded stereo.

Meanwhile, the high-end GS model stands out with an aero kit, a chrome exhaust tip, fog lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a total of six speakers, among other things.
