Although I didn’t drive an xD equipped with the automatic transmission, I wonder about the effectiveness of a 4-speed autobox given the modest power output of the engine and the fact that up to five occupants and their gear will fit within the xD. Four cogs seem rather “old school.” For example, Ford’s new Fiesta utilizes a six-speed autobox to maximize performance and economy.

On the road
The xD delivers engaging driving dynamics without feeling harsh or too performance-oriented. It’s remarkably agile and nimble, and, reasonably responsive given its econo persona.
I enjoyed my time behind the wheel of this spirited compact. I wish though that it came with a centre armrest. I always find my right shoulder and arm drooping in vehicles absent this most basic asset, and I can’t understand for the life of me why a manufacturer would exclude it in order to save a buck or two.
When it comes to safety however, very little is excluded from the xD. It receives a stability control program, traction control and a full suite of airbags—including side curtain airbags front and rear—as standard equipment.

There’s a lot of healthy competition in the sub-compact econo class. The quality and refinement of these vehicles has sharply increased of late, and the xD is an excellent example of this trend. It’s also an excellent example of how automotive marketing is embracing the tech-savvy wirelessly connected Y-generation.
